X.  The Possibility of an Equitable and Enduring Peace

between Palestine and Israel

An important question is: what would the success of an equitable and enduring peace give to the region and the world?

The following is a list of possibilities for this region and for the world not as a prescription, but as possibility.  The impact and extent can only be envisioned:

  •     Freedom and security from both state and militant terrorism

  •     The emergence of respect and honoring of the two sides toward the other’s ethnic, religious and national values

  •     The end of hostility toward Israel by the Arab world

  •     A blossoming of regional commerce and cultural exchange promoting mutual prosperity

  •      Israel as part of the Middle East rather than its present state as a European intrusion into the Middle East

  •      The healing of past wounds through a Truth and Reconciliation Process

  •      For the Palestinians, freedom to engage in cultural, political and economic development

  •     For the Israelis, freedom from the moral and economic drain of the occupation and its consequences as well as the release of the fear of annihilation

  •     A shift in relations between the Arab countries and the United States and Europe.
